Community Health Initiative:

Diabetes, heart disease, HIV/AIDS and Substance Abuse are among some health risks that affect the Garifuna-American, Caribbean-American and Central American communities in the Los Angeles County Area. The people in these underserved and often neglected communities are dying from treatable diseases at greater rates than the general population due to communication and cultural barriers that prevent them from seeking help or resources and following the doctor’s advice.

To address this issue, the Garifuna American Heritage Foundation United (GAHFU) will provide services that greatly impact families through the Community Health Initiative. GAHFU will host an Annual Health Fair during the month of November, which will benefit 500-1000 community members. The Garifuna/Caribbean Health Fair will provide uninsured and underinsured people in the Garifuna-American, Caribbean-American and Central American communities with free flu shots, free screenings for Diabetes, HIV/AIDS, blood pressure and more... GAHFU will partner with medical professionals and students from various local hospitals and health care providers to donate their services at this event. GAHFU will provide resources where individuals and families can find affordable health insurance.

GAHFU will also provide workshops in the following areas -

Health Workshops:

Diabetes

Heart disease

Group Fitness

Nutrition

STD

HIV/AIDS....

Support Group

While it is true that many social services agencies throughout California offer quality behavioral health services, those offered by the Garifuna American Heritage Foundation United are unique in that they are specifically tailored to meet the needs of Garifuna, Caribbean and Central American families in urban areas.

Staffs are bilingual and bicultural, which means they are well equipped to facilitate a quality course that explores intricate details of behavioral health including PTSD and Substance Use. Through groups, this program promotes and fosters safe relationships by reinforcing safe coping skills and alters non-productive or harmful behaviors.

Resources and referrals will be offered to clients who require more intense support. For more information, please contact GAHFU (323) 898-6841
